Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)<\/a> announced that its first Green Hydrogen<\/a> project has generated over 1 gigawatt hour (GWh) of green energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This achievement has resulted in a reduction of nearly 450 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions since its launch in May 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is the first in the Middle East and North Africa to harness solar energy for the production of green hydrogen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project was developed in partnership with Siemens Energy and Expo 2020 Dubai. It is located within the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world\u2019s largest single-site solar park, which aims for a capacity exceeding 5,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, the project produces 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. It is designed as a testing platform for hydrogen applications across various sectors, including transport and industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stored hydrogen is later converted into electricity using a hydrogen gas motor, which has a capacity of about 300 kilowatts, enabling power generation at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The production process uses electrolysis powered by renewable energy, achieving globally competitive green hydrogen production costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green hydrogen, a carbon-free fuel, is increasingly recognized as a crucial component in combating climate change and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEWA has established itself as a benchmark for solar energy pricing to further strengthen Dubai’s status as a hub for clean energy innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DEWA project contributes to the UAE\u2019s goal of capturing 25% of the global low-carbon hydrogen market, as the country aims to become a leader in the global energy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur aim is to achieve the goals of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, ensuring 100% clean energy by mid-century,\u201d said DEWA\u2019s Managing Director and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
