{"id":1199,"date":"2024-12-11T10:52:02","date_gmt":"2024-12-11T06:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.utilitybusinessmena.com\/?p=1199"},"modified":"2024-12-11T10:52:02","modified_gmt":"2024-12-11T06:52:02","slug":"siemens-energy-partners-with-sse-to-accelerate-100-hydrogen-gas-turbine-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cheeltech.com\/utilitybusinessmena\/electricity\/siemens-energy-partners-with-sse-to-accelerate-100-hydrogen-gas-turbine-technology","title":{"rendered":"Siemens Energy partners with SSE to accelerate 100% hydrogen gas turbine technology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitybusinessmena.com\/executive-interview\/how-fugro-is-unlocking-the-power-of-data-for-asset-integrity-and-project-lifecycle-management\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"903\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SSE<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitybusinessmena.com\/digitalisation\/smart-infrastructure\/siemens-to-deploy-technology-at-60-government-buildings-in-uae-for-27-energy-savings\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1016\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Siemens Energy<\/a> have unveiled a major partnership, \u201cMission H2 Power,\u201d aimed at developing gas turbines capable of running entirely on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitybusinessmena.com\/analysis\/africas-green-hydrogen-dream\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hydrogen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move is set to play a key role in decarbonising the UK\u2019s power sector, with a particular focus on SSE\u2019s Keadby 2 Power Station in North Lincolnshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The multi-million-pound collaboration will see Siemens Energy engineer a new combustion system for its SGT5-9000HL gas turbine, enabling it to operate on 100% hydrogen while retaining the flexibility to use natural gas or a blend of both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the project, Siemens Energy plans to expand its Clean Energy Centre in Berlin, where testing for large-scale hydrogen turbine technology will take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis partnership represents a crucial step forward in making hydrogen a viable fuel for large gas turbines,\u201d said Darren Davidson, Vice-President of Siemens Energy UK &amp; Ireland. \u201cOur HL-class gas turbine has already set benchmarks in efficiency, and now we\u2019re working to unlock its potential for a zero-carbon future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative aligns with the UK\u2019s National Energy System Operator forecast, which projects the need for 7GW of low-carbon, flexible power capacity by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hydrogen-fired power stations are expected to supply approximately half of that demand, highlighting the importance of advancing hydrogen technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHydrogen-fired power stations will be indispensable in providing flexible backup to renewable energy sources,\u201d said SSE Thermal\u2019s Managing Director, Finlay McCutcheon. \u201cMission H2 Power accelerates this transition, bringing us closer to a decarbonized energy mix.
